Physical Activity & School Health Policies

The Museum School of East Dallas (TMS) is committed to supporting student health and wellness. In accordance with Texas Education Code §§ 28.002(l), 28.004(k), and 38.0141, the following information outlines TMS policies related to physical activity, school health, and student wellness.

 

Physical Activity Requirements

TMS ensures that all students in applicable grade levels engage in the required amount and level of physical activity in accordance with Texas law.

  • Students participate in structured physical activity through:

    • Physical Education (PE)

    • Movement-based enrichment (e.g., dance, fitness, martial arts, boxing)

    • Recess and active breaks

  • TMS meets or exceeds state requirements by incorporating daily opportunities for movement aligned with our extended day model.

 

School Health Advisory Council (SHAC)

TMS maintains a School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) to support student wellness and provide recommendations on health-related policies.

  • Frequency of Meetings: Quarterly

  • The SHAC provides input on:

    • Physical activity and wellness practices

    • Nutrition and student health initiatives

    • School health policies

 

Vending Machine Policy

TMS implements policies to restrict student access to vending machines in accordance with state guidelines.

  • TMS does not provide open access to vending machines for students during the school day

  • Any available food or beverage options meet applicable nutrition guidelines

  • Compliance is monitored by school leadership

 

Tobacco-Free School Policy

TMS enforces a strict tobacco-free environment.

  • The use of tobacco products, including e-cigarettes and vaping devices, is prohibited:

    • On all school property

    • At all school-sponsored and school-related events

  • Violations will result in disciplinary action in accordance with the Student & Family Handbook and applicable laws

  • This policy applies to:

    • Students

    • Staff

    • Visitors

 

Physical Fitness Assessment Notification

In accordance with Texas Education Code § 38.101, TMS administers physical fitness assessments to applicable grade levels.

  • Parents and guardians have the right to request their child’s physical fitness assessment results in writing at the end of the school year
