Assessment

Assessment & Testing Information

The Museum School of East Dallas (TMS) is committed to transparency in student assessment. In compliance with Title I, Part A of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) (20 U.S.C. § 6312(e)(2)(B)), the following information outlines all required state and local assessments administered at TMS.

State Required Assessments

 

STAAR Assessment (State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness)

Subject Areas Assessed:

  • Reading Language Arts (grades 3–8)

  • Mathematics (grades 3–8)

  • Science (grade 5 and 8)

  • Social Studies (grade 8)

Purpose:
STAAR measures student mastery of the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) and determines student readiness for the next grade level.

Source of Requirement:
Required by the State of Texas under Texas Education Code and administered by the Texas Education Agency (TEA).

Time & Format:

  • Administered annually in the spring

  • Computer-based format (with paper accommodations when applicable)

  • Untimed, typically completed within a school day

Schedule:
Administered during the official Texas testing window (typically April–May). Exact dates are shared annually on the TMS Parent Calendar.

Results:

  • Preliminary results available within weeks

  • Final results shared with families via the state portal and school communication

  • Results are typically distributed in late spring to early summer

 

Local & Charter-Required Assessments

NWEA MAP Growth

 

Subject Areas Assessed:

  • Reading

  • Mathematics

 

Purpose:
Measures student growth over time and helps teachers adjust instruction to meet individual student needs.

 

Source of Requirement:
Required by TMS as part of its instructional model and data-driven practices.

 

Time & Format:

  • Administered 3 times per year (Beginning, Middle, End of Year)

  • Computer-adaptive assessment

  • Typically 45–60 minutes per subject

 

Schedule:

  • BOY: August

  • MOY: December

  • EOY: May

 

Results:

  • Results shared with families after each testing window

  • Used during conferences and academic planning

 

mCLASS Assessment (K–2)

Subject Areas Assessed:

  • Early literacy skills

 

Purpose:
Identifies foundational reading skills and supports early intervention.

 

Source of Requirement:
Required for early literacy monitoring and intervention support.

 

Time & Format:

  • Administered individually by trained staff

  • Short, skill-based assessments

 

Schedule:

  • Conducted multiple times per year

 

Results:

  • Shared with families and used to guide instruction and support

 

Additional Classroom-Based Assessments

 

Subject Areas Assessed:

  • Reading, Math, Science, Social Studies

 

Purpose:
Monitor student progress toward mastery of TEKS and unit objectives.

 

Source of Requirement:
Developed and required by TMS as part of its instructional program.

 

Time & Format:

  • Includes unit assessments, projects, and exhibitions

  • Varies by grade level and subject

 

Results:

  • Shared through progress reports, conferences, and exhibitions

Family Communication of Results

TMS is committed to timely and clear communication of assessment results:

  • Results will be shared via email, conferences, and/or secure portals

  • Families will receive explanations of results and how they support student learning

  • Teachers will discuss results during conferences and provide next steps
